What AVIF is good for

AVIF is a modern image format built from the AV1 video codec. It squeezes photos and graphics down to a much smaller file size than JPG or PNG while keeping the picture sharp, which is why it's popular for speeding up websites. Converting an old JPG or PNG to AVIF can often cut the file size roughly in half at the same visual quality — handy when you're trimming page-load time or fitting more images under an upload limit.

When you'd convert AVIF back to JPG or PNG

Not everything speaks AVIF yet. If a friend sent you an .avif file and your photo editor, printing service, or older phone won't open it, converting to JPG or PNG makes it work everywhere again. Choose JPG for photographs where you want the smallest file, and PNG when you need a transparent background or crisp text and line art with no compression blur. AVIF supports transparency too, so PNG preserves it on the way out.

How it works

This converter uses your browser's own image engine to decode and re-encode pictures on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server — the file never leaves your computer. AVIF encoding is heavier math than JPG, so a large photo may take a couple of seconds; that's normal, not a stall.

FAQ

Will an AVIF file open on any device?
Most current browsers and phones support AVIF, but some older software, email clients, and print shops don't. If in doubt, convert to JPG for the widest compatibility.
Does converting to AVIF lose quality?
At high quality settings the difference is hard to see, and AVIF holds detail better than JPG at the same file size. Very low settings will show blocky artifacts, so preview before downloading.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
