Turn your gauge into an exact stitch count

Every crochet blanket starts with two numbers: how many stitches fit in an inch, and how many rows fit in an inch. That ratio is your gauge, and it depends on your yarn weight, hook size, stitch pattern, and personal tension. Once you know your gauge, sizing a blanket is simple multiplication โ€” target width times stitches per inch gives your stitch count, and target height times rows per inch gives your row count. This calculator does that math for you and adds one turning chain so your starting chain is ready to go.

Why a swatch matters

Guessing your gauge is the fastest way to end up with a blanket that comes out too narrow or eats far more yarn than planned. A four-inch swatch in your real stitch pattern takes minutes and saves hours of frogging. Count the stitches across the swatch and divide by four for stitches per inch; count the rows tall and divide by four for rows per inch. Your results are estimates โ€” actual size shifts slightly with blocking, border rows, and tension changes, so treat the numbers as a strong starting point rather than a guarantee.

How to use it

  1. Pick a size preset (lovey, baby, throw, twin, and more) or choose Custom.
  2. If custom, type your target width and height in inches.
  3. Crochet a 4 in swatch, then enter your stitches per inch and rows per inch.
  4. Read your starting chain, foundation stitch count, and total rows below.
  5. Check the finished-size line to confirm it matches what you wanted.

FAQ

What if my stitch pattern needs a multiple?
Round the foundation stitch count up or down to the nearest multiple your pattern repeat requires, then add the turning chain your stitch calls for.
Why does it add one chain?
Single crochet uses one turning chain. If you work half double, double, or treble, add 1, 2, or 3 more chains instead.
Does my data leave my device?
No. Everything runs in your browser โ€” nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
How do I get an exact yarn amount?
This tool sizes the blanket; for yardage, weigh your swatch and scale it to the finished area as an estimate.
