What this calculator does

Running short on a color halfway through a project is one of the most frustrating parts of cross stitch โ€” dye lots vary, and a matching skein may be long gone from the shop shelf. This tool gives you a quick, before-you-start estimate of how many skeins of DMC floss one color will use, so you can buy enough (plus a spare) in a single trip.

How the estimate works

The math starts from a widely used rule of thumb: one 8-meter, 6-strand skein covers roughly 1,500 full cross stitches when you stitch with 2 strands on 14-count Aida. From there it scales for your project. Using fewer strands stretches a skein further, while more strands use it up faster. A higher fabric count means smaller stitches and less thread per stitch, so each skein covers more ground; a lower count covers fewer. The result is always rounded up to a whole skein and never drops below one.

How to use it

  1. Count (or estimate from your pattern's color key) the total full stitches for a single floss color.
  2. Type that number into the Total full stitches box.
  3. Pick how many strands you stitch with โ€” most 14-count work uses 2.
  4. Choose your fabric count, such as 14 ct Aida or 28 ct linen over two.
  5. Click Estimate skeins and read the whole-skein result, then repeat for each color.

FAQ

Is this exact?
No โ€” it is an estimate. Thread use varies with your tension, how often you start and stop, frogging (unpicking), and railroading. Treat the number as a shopping guide, not a guarantee.
Should I buy extra?
Yes. Buying one spare skein per heavily used color protects you against dye-lot changes and mistakes. It is cheap insurance against a stalled project.
Does it handle back stitch or French knots?
The estimate is based on full cross stitches only. Back stitch, knots, and long stitches use extra thread, so add a little more for colors used in outlining.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser โ€” nothing you type is sent to a server or stored.
