What powers and roots actually do

Raising a number to a power means multiplying it by itself. In 5³, the base is 5 and the exponent is 3, so you get 5 × 5 × 5 = 125. A root runs that backward: the cube root of 125 asks "what number, multiplied by itself three times, gives 125?" โ€” and the answer is 5. FAQ

Can it handle negative or decimal exponents?
Yes. Negative exponents give a fraction (2-2 = 0.25), and decimals work too โ€” 90.5 is the same as the square root of 9, which is 3.
Why does an even root of a negative number fail?
There's no real answer. No real number squared gives a negative result, so the square, fourth, or sixth root of a negative number isn't a real value. Odd roots, like the cube root of -27 (which is -3), work fine.
Are very large results exact?
Small whole-number powers are exact. Very large or many-decimal results are shown to standard browser precision and may round slightly at the far end, which is normal for any calculator.
