Final Exam Grade Calculator
Enter your current grade, the grade you want, and how much the final is worth. We'll tell you exactly what score you need on the final โ and whether it's actually possible.
๐ How it works & FAQWhat score do I need on my final?
Finals week math shouldn't require its own study session. This calculator answers one question fast: what do you need to score on the final exam to end up with the grade you want? Type in your current grade, your target, and how much the final counts toward your course grade, and the answer updates live — no button to press, no sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser.
The formula is the standard weighted-average calculation your professor uses: needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. Your current grade fills the non-final portion of the course, the final fills the rest, and the calculator solves for the missing exam score. It also shows your best and worst possible outcomes, so you know your full range before you walk into the exam room.
How to use it
- Enter your current grade as a percentage — the grade you have going into the final.
- Enter your target grade — the overall course grade you want (say, 90 for an A-).
- Enter the final exam weight from your syllabus (e.g., 20 if the final is worth 20% of your grade).
- Read the result: the exact score you need, a verdict on how realistic it is, and your best- and worst-case final grades.
FAQ
- It says I need more than 100%. What now?
- That means your target is mathematically out of reach — even a perfect final won't get you there. Check the “best possible grade” result to see the highest grade you can still earn, and aim for that instead. Extra credit or a regrade may also help.
- Where do I find my final's weight?
- Check your course syllabus or your school's grade portal. It's usually listed in the grading breakdown as something like “Final exam: 25%.” If your course uses points instead, divide the final's points by the total course points.
- What if the calculator says I need 0% or less?
- Congratulations — your target grade is already locked in. Your non-final work alone is enough to reach it, so even skipping the final (not recommended!) wouldn't drop you below your target.
- Does this work for weighted categories or multiple finals?
- Yes, as long as you can express everything as one number. Combine all your pre-final work into a single current-grade percentage, and if you have two finals, treat their combined weight as one exam and the needed score as the average you must earn across both.
