How many boxes of flooring do you need?

Whether you're laying laminate, hardwood, vinyl plank, or tile, the math is the same: measure the room, add a little extra for cuts and mistakes, then divide by how much each box covers. This flooring calculator does all of that instantly. Enter your room's length and width in feet, the square footage printed on the box, and a waste allowance, and it returns the total area, the padded area, and the exact number of boxes to buy โ€” always rounding up, because you can't buy a partial box.

Why the waste allowance matters

Almost every install wastes some material. Angled cuts around doorways, closets, and vents leave offcuts you can't reuse. A 10% waste allowance is the standard starting point for straight, rectangular rooms. Bump it to 15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or busy rooms with lots of corners, and consider 20% for wide-plank or patterned tile. Buying a little extra also leaves you with attic stock โ€” matching planks for future repairs after the product may be discontinued.

How to use it

  1. Measure your room's length and width in feet and enter them.
  2. Enter the coverage per box (it's on the label, usually 18โ€“30 sq ft).
  3. Set your waste allowance โ€” 10% is a safe default for simple rooms.
  4. Read the "Boxes to buy" card; the sub-line shows total coverage.

FAQ

How do I handle an L-shaped room?
Split it into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the box counts โ€” or add the areas together first, then divide.
Should I round boxes up or down?
Always up. This tool uses ceil, so partial boxes round to the next whole box to guarantee full coverage.
What waste percentage should I use?
10% for straight lays, 15% for diagonals or many cuts, and up to 20% for herringbone or patterned tile.
Does this include the room's closets or nooks?
Only if you measure them. Add closet or alcove areas as separate rectangles for an accurate total.

These results are planning estimates, not professional advice โ€” confirm measurements and buy from one dye lot before ordering.
