Know the cost before you drive

Fuel is one of the easiest trip expenses to forecast, yet most of us guess. This Fuel Cost Calculator turns three numbers you already know โ€” how far you are going, how thirsty your vehicle is, and what fuel costs today โ€” into a clear dollar figure. Use it to split gas money with friends, compare two routes, decide whether a road trip beats a flight, or set a realistic travel budget.

MPG or L/100km โ€” both work

Switch the units toggle to match how your part of the world measures fuel. In Miles & MPG mode the tool divides distance by miles-per-gallon to find US gallons burned, then multiplies by your price per gallon. In Kilometres & L/100km mode it multiplies distance by your litres-per-100km rating to find litres burned, then multiplies by price per litre. Higher MPG means better efficiency; lower L/100km means better efficiency โ€” they run in opposite directions, so pick the one printed on your dashboard or spec sheet.

How to use it

  1. Pick your units: Miles & MPG, or Kilometres & L/100km.
  2. Enter the one-way distance of your trip.
  3. Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency (check your trip computer or manual).
  4. Enter the current fuel price per gallon or litre.
  5. Tick Round trip if you are driving back too โ€” the distance is doubled automatically.
  6. Read the total cost and the fuel-used breakdown instantly, with no button to press.

FAQ

Does it use US or Imperial gallons?
MPG mode uses US gallons. If your MPG figure is Imperial (UK), your result will read a little high, so convert first or use the metric mode.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored.
Can I estimate real-world versus rated MPG?
Yes โ€” just enter your actual observed MPG. City driving, hills, and cold weather all lower efficiency, so a real trip average gives a truer cost.
How accurate is the total?
Results are estimates based only on the numbers you enter and can vary with traffic, load, and driving style. Treat the figure as a helpful budget guide, not an exact bill.
