Gathering Ratio Calculator

Figure out exactly how much fabric to cut for a ruffle or gathered seam, at the fullness you want.

๐Ÿ“– How it works & FAQ

Works in any unit โ€” inches, cm, or yards โ€” just keep it consistent. Add seam allowance separately.

What a gathering ratio is

Gathering (and its cousins ruffling and shirring) means sewing a long strip of fabric down to a shorter finished length so it puffs and folds. The gathering ratio is simply how many times longer the flat fabric is than the finished edge it attaches to. A 2x ratio means you start with twice as much fabric as the final length. The higher the ratio, the denser and more voluminous the gathers.

Which ratio to pick

The three common ratios are guideposts, not rules. Use 1.5x (light) for a soft, barely-there wave โ€” good for heavier fabrics, curtains, or subtle skirt fullness. Use 2x (medium) as the everyday all-rounder for skirts, sleeves, and apparel ruffles. Use 2.5x (full) for lightweight fabrics like chiffon, voile, and cotton lawn, or anytime you want a lush, ruffly look. Thicker fabric needs a lower ratio, because the bulk creates fullness on its own.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you're finding the fabric to cut, or the finished length from fabric you already have.
  2. Type the length you know โ€” the edge it attaches to, or the strip on hand.
  3. Pick a fullness ratio: light, medium, or full.
  4. Read the result instantly, then add your seam allowances before cutting.

FAQ

Does this include seam allowance?
No. The numbers are for the gathered edge only. Add hem and seam allowance to the fabric before you cut, and to the finished piece it joins.
Can I use centimeters or yards?
Yes. The math is unitless, so any unit works as long as you use the same one for both fields. Inches in, inches out.
My gathers look too flat โ€” what happened?
Either the ratio was too low for your fabric weight, or the fabric relaxed after sewing. Bump up to 2.5x for airy fabrics and steam the gathers to set them.
What ratio do sewing patterns usually assume?
Most default to 2x. If a pattern piece is exactly double the seam it sews to, that's a medium gather.

These figures are cutting estimates to help you plan โ€” always test on a scrap and confirm against your pattern before cutting your good fabric.
