Ice Calculator
Tell us how many guests you're hosting and we'll figure out exactly how much ice to buy.
๐ How it works & FAQHow much ice do you really need?
The simple rule of thumb for any party is 1 to 1.5 pounds of ice per guest. That covers ice in drinks plus a little melt over a couple of hours. A 20-person gathering lands around 20–30 pounds, or two to three standard 10-pound bags. This calculator does that math instantly and rounds up to whole bags so you know exactly what to grab at the store.
When to buy more
Ice disappears faster in two situations. On a hot day (80°F and up), everything melts quicker and people drink more, so we nudge the estimate up. If you're chilling bottles and cans in a cooler or tub, that ice does double duty and you'll want extra on top of what goes in glasses. Toggle either option and the numbers adjust automatically. When in doubt, round up — leftover ice is far better than running dry mid-party. These are planning estimates, not exact figures.

FAQ
- How much ice per person for drinks only?
- About 1 pound per guest if it's mild out and ice is just for cups. Bump to 1.5 pounds for longer events or warm weather.
- How many pounds are in a bag of ice?
- Standard party bags are usually 7 or 10 pounds; larger warehouse bags run 16 to 20 pounds. Pick your size above for an accurate bag count.
- Will I have enough if guests arrive over several hours?
- For events past two to three hours, lean toward the high end of the range or buy one extra bag, since ice keeps melting the whole time.
- How should I store ice before the party?
- Keep bags in a freezer or a well-insulated cooler and only open them when needed — a closed cooler can hold ice for many hours.
