Knitting Gauge Calculator
Enter your swatch gauge and the size you want, and get the exact stitches to cast on and rows to knit.
๐ How it works & FAQWhy gauge decides your finished size
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows your yarn, needles, and hands produce over a fixed distance โ 4 inches or 10 centimeters. Because every knitter tensions yarn a little differently, the same pattern can come out inches too big or too small. Once you know your own gauge, the math to hit a target size is simple: multiply the width you want by your stitches-per-unit, and the length you want by your rows-per-unit.
The formula this tool uses
Stitches to cast on = finished width × (stitches per 4" ÷ 4). Rows to knit = finished length × (rows per 4" ÷ 10 for cm, or ÷ 4 for inches). Switch the unit selector and the gauge span and size labels update to match, so your numbers always stay in one measuring system. Results are rounded to whole stitches and rows.
How to use it
- Knit a swatch at least 5" square in your project stitch, then wash and block it the way you will treat the finished piece.
- Lay it flat and count how many stitches fall across 4 inches (or 10cm) and how many rows fall down the same distance.
- Pick Inches or Centimeters, then type those two counts into stitches-per and rows-per.
- Enter the finished width and length you want the piece to measure.
- Read the cast-on stitch count and row count instantly, then adjust for any pattern repeat or edge stitches.
FAQ
- Why measure over 4 inches instead of 1?
- Counting across a larger span averages out small irregularities, so your stitches-per-inch is far more accurate.
- Should I round the cast-on number?
- Yes โ round to a whole stitch, and if your pattern has a stitch repeat, round to the nearest multiple of that repeat.
- My swatch gauge keeps changing. What now?
- Always block your swatch first, and try different needle sizes until the gauge matches; needle size is the fastest way to adjust.
- Is my data uploaded anywhere?
- No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. These figures are estimates โ always confirm with a blocked swatch before casting on.
