How much mulch do you actually need?

Buying mulch is one of those jobs where guessing gets expensive fast. Order too little and you're back at the garden center mid-project; order too much and you've got bags rotting in the garage. The math is simple once you know it: multiply the area of your bed by the depth you want (in feet), and you have the volume in cubic feet. This calculator does that instantly and then converts the result into the two units suppliers actually sell in โ€” cubic yards for bulk deliveries and 2 cubic foot bags for smaller jobs.

How deep should mulch be?

For most garden beds, a layer of 2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot. That's deep enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering plant roots. Go up to 3 to 4 inches around trees and shrubs, and keep it thinner โ€” around 1 to 2 inches โ€” over the crowns of perennials. Remember that mulch settles and breaks down, so many gardeners top up an inch each spring rather than starting from scratch.

How to use it

  1. Measure your bed's length and width in feet and enter them.
  2. Enter how deep you want the mulch, in inches.
  3. Read your cubic yards for bulk orders, or the bag count for pre-packaged 2 cu ft bags โ€” the numbers update as you type.

FAQ

How many bags are in a cubic yard?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it takes about 13.5 of the standard 2 cubic foot bags to equal one yard. If you need more than about 10 bags, a bulk delivery is usually cheaper.
My bed isn't a rectangle โ€” what do I enter?
Estimate an average length and width, or break the space into rough rectangles, calculate each, and add them up. A little rounding up is fine and gives you a small buffer.
Why does the bag count round up?
You can't buy part of a bag, so we round up to the next whole bag to make sure you have enough to finish the job.
Does mulch type change the amount?
No โ€” wood chips, bark, or straw all fill the same volume. These figures are estimates for planning, not a guaranteed exact yield, since coverage varies with settling and how you spread it.
