Black and White Photo Converter

Turn any photo grayscale right in your browser โ€” no upload, no sign-up, just a clean black-and-white image you can download in seconds.

๐Ÿ“– How it works & FAQ

Pick a photo, slide toward full black & white, then download. Everything happens on your device.

Grayscale done the right way

Not all black-and-white conversions are equal. The quick trick of averaging red, green, and blue makes skies and skin look muddy because it ignores how our eyes actually perceive brightness. This converter uses the standard luminance formula โ€” 0.299 × Red + 0.587 × Green + 0.114 × Blue โ€” the same weighting used in television and image-editing software. Green carries the most visual weight, blue the least, so tones map to grays that feel natural and keep their contrast.

The intensity slider

Full black and white isn't always what you want. The intensity slider blends smoothly between your original color photo and a complete grayscale version. Leave it at 100% for a classic monochrome look, or ease it back toward 0% for a faded, desaturated, half-color effect that's popular for backgrounds and vintage styling. Drag the slider and the preview updates instantly.

How to use it

  1. Click the file box and choose a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC where supported).
  2. Watch the live preview appear, already converted to black and white.
  3. Drag the intensity slider to taste โ€” full B&W or a partial desaturation.
  4. Click Download image to save the result as a PNG.
  5. Pick another photo to convert as many as you like.

FAQ

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the HTML canvas. Your image never leaves your device โ€” nothing is sent to a server.
Why does this look better than just desaturating?
It weights each color channel by how bright it appears to the human eye, so reds, greens, and blues become distinct, accurate grays instead of a flat mush.
What format is the download?
A PNG file, which is lossless and keeps the conversion crisp. Very large photos are scaled to 1600px wide for smooth previewing.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile or desktop browser, and the download saves straight to your device.
