Relocation Cost Calculator
Itemize movers, deposits, travel, storage, utility setup, and temporary housing to see the full cost of your move โ with a contingency buffer built in. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
๐ How it works & FAQWhy relocation costs more than the moving truck
The quote from the moving company is rarely the whole story. By the time you hand over security deposits, drive or fly to the new city, keep a storage unit for a month, pay utility connection fees, and cover a short-term rental while you wait for keys, the real cost of a move can easily double. This calculator puts every one of those line items in one place, so the total you budget is the total you actually spend. Everything runs locally in your browser — no sign-up, and none of your numbers ever leave your device. Figures are estimates only, not professional or financial advice.
How to use it
- Enter an amount next to each expense row. Leave anything that doesn't apply blank or at zero.
- Click + Add line item for extras like pet transport, cleaning fees, or packing supplies, and pick the closest category.
- Remove any row that doesn't fit your move with the ✕ button.
- Adjust the contingency buffer — 10–15% is a sensible cushion for surprises.
- Watch the results update live: subtotal, buffer, the full total to budget, and your single biggest expense.
FAQ
- How much should I budget for a local vs. long-distance move?
- Local moves in the US commonly run from a few hundred dollars to around $2,500, while long-distance or cross-country moves often land between $4,000 and $10,000 or more depending on distance, weight, and season. Get quotes from at least three movers before filling in the first row.
- Why include a contingency buffer?
- Moves have a habit of producing surprises — an extra hotel night, last-minute boxes, overlapping rent, or a fuel surcharge. Setting aside 10–15% of your subtotal means those surprises don't break your budget.
- What counts as "deposits and fees"?
- Security deposits, first and last month's rent, pet deposits, application fees, HOA move-in charges, and elevator reservation fees are the usual suspects. Some are refunded later, but you still need the cash up front.
- Is my data saved or sent anywhere?
- No. The math runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Refreshing the page clears your numbers, so screenshot or jot down your total when you're done.
