๐Ÿ“– How it works & FAQ

Every cost of the drive, in one place

Gas is only part of what a road trip really costs. This calculator adds the four big line items โ€” fuel, lodging, food, and tolls โ€” into one honest number, then divides it by however many people are sharing the ride. Fuel is computed from your distance, your vehicle's fuel economy, and the gas price you enter, with a one-way or round-trip toggle so you never forget the drive home. Every rate is an editable input, so you can match your actual car, your actual route, and this week's actual pump prices. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Enter the one-way distance in miles and choose round trip or one way.
  2. Add your vehicle's MPG and the current gas price per gallon.
  3. Fill in the number of nights you'll pay for lodging and the average nightly rate.
  4. Set days on the road, a daily food budget for the whole group, and any tolls or parking fees.
  5. Choose how many travelers are splitting the bill โ€” the total, fuel cost, and per-person share update instantly as you type.

Estimates only, not professional financial or travel advice; fuel prices, tolls, and lodging rates vary by route and season.

FAQ

How is the fuel cost calculated?
Miles driven divided by MPG gives gallons burned; gallons multiplied by your gas price gives the fuel cost. The round-trip toggle simply doubles the distance before dividing.
Is the food budget per person or for the group?
It's the whole group's daily food spend. If you think in per-person terms, multiply your per-person number by the group size before entering it.
What MPG should I use?
Highway MPG is closest for long interstate drives; your car's real-world combined figure is safer if the route mixes city and highway. Knock a few MPG off if the car is fully loaded or carrying a roof box.
Does the per-person split include fuel?
Yes โ€” the per-person figure divides the entire total (fuel, lodging, food, and tolls) evenly among the travelers you enter.
