Sales Tax by State Calculator

Pick a state, enter your purchase amount, and optionally add a local or county rate. The calculator applies the state base sales-tax rate and shows the tax and total instantly โ€” right in your browser, with nothing sent to a server.

๐Ÿ“– How it works & FAQ

Uses the state base rate only. Local city and county rates vary widely โ€” enter yours above for a closer estimate. Estimates only.

Estimate sales tax anywhere in the US

Sales tax in the United States is set state by state, and the differences are big: California's base rate is 7.25%, while Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska charge no statewide sales tax at all. This calculator has the state base rate for all 50 states plus Washington, DC built in, so you can quickly estimate the tax and out-the-door total on any purchase.

Because most states also allow cities, counties, and special districts to add their own tax on top, the real rate at the register is often higher than the state base. If you know your local add-on rate, enter it in the local rate box and the calculator combines it with the state rate for a much closer estimate. Everything runs in your browser & nothing you type is uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose your state from the dropdown โ€” the state base rate is shown next to each name.
  2. Enter the pre-tax purchase amount in dollars.
  3. Optionally add your local or county rate as a percentage (for example, 1.5 for 1.5%). Leave it at 0 to use the state base rate alone.
  4. Read the results instantly: the sales tax, the total with tax, and the combined rate used.

These figures are estimates only, not professional, tax, or financial advice โ€” rates vary by location, can change during the year, and some items are taxed differently or exempt.

FAQ

Why is my receipt higher than this estimate?
Most likely a local city or county rate applies on top of the state base. Check a recent receipt for the exact combined rate, then enter the difference in the local rate box.
Which states have no sales tax?
Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, and Delaware have no state or local sales tax. Alaska has no statewide tax, but some Alaskan municipalities charge their own local sales tax.
Does this cover groceries, cars, or online orders?
It applies one flat rate to your amount. Many states tax groceries, vehicles, and certain services at special rates or exempt them entirely, so treat those results as rough estimates.
How do I find my exact local rate?
Your state's Department of Revenue website usually has a rate lookup by address or ZIP code. Enter the local portion here to refine the result.
