Degrees vs. radians — the setting that trips people up
The single most common wrong answer on a scientific calculator comes from the angle mode. In degrees, sin(30) = 0.5. In radians, sin(30) is about −0.988, because 30 radians is a completely different angle. Trig homework and most geometry problems use degrees; calculus and physics almost always use radians. Check the DEG / RAD toggle before you trust a trig result — if your answer looks wildly off, this is the first thing to fix.
A quick worked example
Say you want the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs 3 and 4. Enter 3, tap x², add 4 x², then take the square root of the total: √(9 + 16) = √25 = 5. For exponents like 2 to the 10th power, use the xy key: 2, xy, 10 gives 1024. Logs work the same way — log(1000) returns 3 because 10³ = 1000.

FAQ
- Why is my sine or cosine answer wrong?
- Almost always the angle mode. A value expected between −1 and 1 that looks strange usually means you're in radians when you wanted degrees, or the reverse. Flip the DEG / RAD toggle and recompute.
- What's the difference between log and ln?
- log is base 10 (log 100 = 2) and ln is the natural log, base e ≈ 2.718. Chemistry pH uses log; growth, decay, and calculus use ln.
