๐Ÿ“– How it works & FAQ

Know exactly how long your shift really is

Whether you clock in at 9 and leave at 5:30 or work an overnight shift that starts at 10 p.m. and ends at 6 a.m., this calculator tells you exactly how many hours you actually worked. It takes your start time, your end time, and any unpaid break, and turns them into a clean answer: hours and minutes, decimal hours for your timesheet, and โ€” if you enter an hourly rate โ€” an estimate of what the shift pays before taxes.

Overnight shifts are handled automatically. If your end time is earlier than your start time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours, so a 22:00 to 06:00 shift correctly comes out as 8 hours on the clock, not a negative number.

Why decimal hours matter

Most payroll systems and invoices use decimal hours rather than hours and minutes. Seven hours and 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45 โ€” a mix-up that quietly shortchanges people all the time. This tool does the conversion for you, so the number you write on your timesheet matches what you actually worked. Pay figures shown are estimates only, not professional advice; local overtime rules, taxes, and deductions vary.

How to use it

  1. Enter your shift start time and end time using the time pickers.
  2. Type in your unpaid break in minutes โ€” for example, 30 for a half-hour lunch. Set it to 0 if your break is paid.
  3. Optionally enter your hourly rate to see estimated pay for the shift.
  4. Read your results instantly: paid shift length, decimal hours, and pay. They update live as you change any input.

FAQ

Does this handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the end time is at or before the start time, the calculator treats the shift as crossing midnight and adds 24 hours, so night shifts calculate correctly.
Should I subtract paid breaks?
No โ€” only enter breaks that are unpaid. If your employer pays you through your 15-minute rest breaks, leave those out and only subtract unpaid meal breaks.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. For example, 7h 45m is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 decimal hours. The calculator does this for you automatically.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser with plain JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored.
