What this calculator includes

Shopify does not charge listing fees or take a marketplace commission, but selling on it is far from free. Every card payment loses a processing fee ($0.30 plus 2.9% on the Basic plan, less on higher tiers), stores that use an outside payment gateway pay an extra transaction fee on top, and the monthly subscription has to be earned back before you make a cent. This tool combines all three: it deducts processing and transaction fees from your full order total, spreads your plan cost across your monthly order volume, then subtracts product and shipping costs to show true per-order profit and margin.

How to use it

  1. Enter your selling price and any shipping you charge the customer โ€” processing fees apply to the full amount paid.
  2. Add your product cost and what you actually pay for shipping and packaging.
  3. Pick your plan to load default rates, or choose Custom and type your own numbers โ€” every fee field stays editable.
  4. If you use PayPal or another third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, enter the extra transaction fee percentage.
  5. Set your typical orders per month so the plan cost is spread realistically.
  6. Read your profit, margin, total fees and net payout โ€” everything updates as you type.

Fee figures are approximate defaults you can edit โ€” always check Shopify’s current pricing page, and treat results as estimates, not financial advice.

FAQ

Does Shopify take a percentage of my sales?
Not as a commission. You pay card processing on each order, plus an extra transaction fee only if you skip Shopify Payments. The subscription is the flat cost of running the store.
What is the extra transaction fee?
When you use a third-party gateway, Shopify adds roughly 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify and 0.6% on Advanced. Using Shopify Payments sets this to zero.
Why spread the monthly plan cost per order?
A $39 plan costs $0.39 per order at 100 orders a month but $3.90 at 10. Low-volume stores feel the subscription far more, and your margins should reflect that.
Is margin based on price or revenue?
Margin here is profit divided by total revenue (price plus shipping charged), the same base the processing fee is calculated on.
