Sod Calculator

Measure your lawn once and see exactly how many rolls or pallets of sod to order โ€” waste included.

Rolls and pallets always round up to the next whole unit. A pallet is treated as 450 sq ft โ€” adjust the roll size above if your supplier's slabs are a different size.

How much sod do you actually need?

Ordering sod comes down to one number: the square footage you want to cover. Multiply your lawn's length by its width and you have the raw area. But a bare-minimum order almost never works โ€” real yards have curves, garden beds, tree rings, and awkward corners, and every cut you make leaves an offcut you can't reuse. This Sod Calculator takes your dimensions, adds a waste allowance, and turns the result into whole rolls and whole pallets so you know exactly what to put on the order.

Rolls, slabs, and pallets explained

Sod is sold two common ways. A single roll or slab typically covers about 10 square feet, though sizes vary by grower, so the roll size is adjustable here. For bigger jobs, growers sell full pallets that cover roughly 450 square feet each. The calculator shows both counts at once: order loose rolls for a small patch or repair, or pallets for a full lawn where they work out cheaper per square foot.

Why a waste allowance matters

A 10% waste allowance is a sensible default for a straightforward rectangle. Bump it toward 15% for irregular shapes, slopes, or lots of curved edges where trimming loss is higher. It is always cheaper to buy one extra roll than to halt a job and wait for a second delivery while your first batch dries out.

How to use it

  1. Enter your lawn's length and width in feet.
  2. Set a waste allowance โ€” 10% is a good starting point.
  3. Adjust the roll size if your supplier's slabs aren't 10 sq ft.
  4. Optionally add the cost per roll for a price estimate.
  5. Read the rolls, pallets, area, and cost โ€” they update as you type.

FAQ

How big is one roll of sod?
Around 10 square feet is typical, but it varies. Check your supplier and change the roll size field to match.
How many square feet is a pallet?
This tool uses about 450 sq ft per pallet, a common figure. Confirm with your grower, as pallet coverage differs by sod type.
My lawn isn't a rectangle โ€” what do I do?
Split it into rectangles, add the areas, or enter a slightly larger bounding box and raise the waste percentage to cover the trimming.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Figures are estimates, not professional advice โ€” confirm quantities with your supplier before ordering.
