๐Ÿ“– How it works & FAQ

What this calculator does

Paste or type a list of numbers and get the six measures that describe almost any data set: the mean (average), the median (middle value), the mode (most frequent value), the range (highest minus lowest), the variance, and the standard deviation (how spread out the numbers are). It handles decimals, negative numbers, and lists with hundreds of values.

When you'd actually use it

Students checking homework or lab results. Teachers building answer keys. A small-business owner averaging daily sales and seeing how much they bounce around. Anyone comparing two data sets where the averages look similar but one is far more consistent โ€” that difference shows up in the standard deviation, not the mean. For example, test scores of 70, 70, 70 and 40, 70, 100 both average 70, but the second set has a standard deviation of about 24.5 while the first is 0.

A quick gotcha: sample vs. population

Variance and standard deviation come in two flavors. Population divides by n; sample divides by n−1 (Bessel's correction) and is the right choice when your numbers are a sample drawn from a larger group. The n−1 version is slightly larger. If a class assignment or spreadsheet gives a different answer than you expect, this is almost always why โ€” check which one is being asked for.

How to use it

  1. Enter your numbers in the box, separated by commas, spaces, or new lines โ€” pasting a column straight from a spreadsheet works.
  2. Pick sample or population if the tool offers the choice; leave it on the default if you're not sure and just need the mean, median, and range.
  3. Read the results โ€” each statistic is labeled, so you can copy just the one you need.
  4. Edit the list and the numbers update; there's no submit-and-reload step.

FAQ

What if my data has more than one mode?
A set can be bimodal or have no mode at all. The calculator lists every value tied for most frequent, and reports "no mode" when every number appears once.
Does it round the results?
Results are shown to a sensible number of decimal places for readability. For exact figures, keep more decimals in your source data before pasting.
Are my numbers sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser โ€” nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
Is it free?
Yes, free and ad-supported, with no sign-up.
