๐ How it works & FAQHow walking steps become calories
Every step you take burns a small amount of energy, and that amount scales with your body weight and how fast you move. This calculator uses a widely cited rule of thumb: a 150-pound person burns roughly 0.04 calories per step at an average walking pace. Your estimate is scaled proportionally — calories per step = 0.04 × (your weight in pounds ÷ 150), then adjusted by a pace multiplier if you choose one. Multiply that by your step count and you get total calories burned. Distance is estimated at 2,000 steps per mile, the common average for adult stride length. Both the base rate and the steps-per-mile figure are editable, so you can tune the math to your own tracker data. These are estimates only, not professional or medical advice; individual burn rates vary with fitness, terrain, and stride.
How to use it
- Enter your step count from your phone, watch, or pedometer.
- Enter your weight and pick pounds or kilograms.
- Optionally choose a pace — brisk walking burns more per step than strolling.
- Read your estimated calories burned, miles walked, and calories per 1,000 steps. Everything updates live as you type.
- If your tracker reports a different stride, adjust the steps-per-mile value to match.
FAQ
- How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
- For a 150-pound person at an average pace, about 400 calories. Heavier walkers burn more, lighter walkers less — enter your own weight for a personal number.
- Why does weight change the result?
- Moving a heavier body takes more energy per step. The formula scales linearly, so a 300-pound walker burns roughly twice as much per step as a 150-pound walker.
- Is 2,000 steps really a mile?
- It is a solid average, but stride length varies with height and speed. Taller people may cover a mile in 1,700–1,900 steps; shorter strides can take 2,200+. Edit the field to match your gait.
- Is my data private?
- Yes. All math runs in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded, stored, or shared.
