Tile Calculator
Tell us your room size and tile dimensions, and we'll work out exactly how many tiles (and boxes) to buy.
๐ How it works & FAQWhat this tile calculator does
Buying tile is one of those jobs where guessing costs money. Order too few and you're back at the store hunting for a matching dye lot; order way too many and you've paid for boxes you'll never open. This calculator turns your room measurements into a clear tile count so you can shop with confidence.
It works for floors, walls, backsplashes and showers, and with any tile shape — square, rectangular subway, or large-format. Just measure the area you want to cover and tell us the size of a single tile.
The math behind it
Each tile covers tile width × tile height square inches. Because there are 144 square inches in a square foot, one square foot holds 144 ÷ (width × height) tiles. We multiply that by your area, then add your waste percentage for cuts, breakage and future repairs, and round up to whole tiles. If you enter how many tiles come in a box, we divide and round up to whole boxes too. These are planning estimates, not professional installation advice — confirm quantities with your tile supplier before ordering.
How to use it
- Measure the area you're tiling in square feet and enter it in Area to cover.
- Enter the width and height of one tile in inches.
- Set a waste % — 10% is typical, more for diagonal or intricate layouts.
- Optionally add tiles per box to see how many boxes to buy. Results and the grid preview update as you type.
FAQ
- How much waste should I add?
- Use 10% for a simple straight layout, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, and up to 20% for rooms with lots of cuts or angles.
- How do I find my area in square feet?
- Multiply the length by the width of the space in feet. For odd shapes, split the room into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.
- Why does it round up?
- You can't buy a fraction of a tile or a partial box, so we always round up to make sure you have enough to finish the job.
- Does it work for wall tile?
- Yes. Measure the wall area in square feet exactly as you would a floor, then enter your tile size as normal.
