๐ How it works & FAQSplit utility bills fairly, without the awkward math
When several roommates share one electric meter, one internet plan, and one water bill, someone always ends up doing arithmetic on the back of an envelope. This calculator does it for you. Add every shared bill for the month, list the people splitting them, and each person's exact total appears instantly. Everything runs in your browser โ no accounts, no uploads, and your numbers never leave your device.
By default everyone gets an equal share. If your household splits unevenly โ a couple sharing the master bedroom, a roommate who travels half the month, or someone whose home office runs the AC all day โ adjust the weights. A weight of 1 is one full share, 0.5 is half a share, and 2 is a double share. The calculator divides every bill in proportion to each person's weight and allocates the leftover cents so the shares always add up to the exact total, to the penny.
How to use it
- Enter each shared bill with a name and its dollar amount. Use + Add bill for as many as you need, or the โ button to remove one.
- List everyone splitting the bills. Leave every weight at 1 for an even split.
- Adjust weights if some people should pay more or less than an equal share.
- Read each person's total in the results โ they update live as you type.
Figures are estimates only, not professional or financial advice; utility rates and fees vary.
FAQ
- How do weights work?
- Each person's share of every bill equals their weight divided by the total of all weights. Two people at weight 1 and one at weight 2 split a $100 bill $25 / $25 / $50.
- Why don't the shares always divide evenly?
- Cents can't always split cleanly โ $100 among three people is $33.33 each with a penny left over. The calculator assigns the extra cents to whoever's share was rounded down the most, so the totals always match the bill exactly.
- Can I use this for rent or subscriptions too?
- Yes. Any shared cost works: rent, streaming services, groceries, cleaning supplies. Just add each expense as a bill.
- Is my data stored anywhere?
- No. The tool is fully client-side; nothing is sent to a server, and refreshing the page clears everything.
