Work Hours Calculator
Add a row for each shift or work session, enter start and end times, and optionally deduct break minutes. Your total updates live in both decimal hours (for timesheets and payroll) and hours:minutes — everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
📖 How it works & FAQAdd up your work hours across any number of shifts
Whether you are filling out a weekly timesheet, invoicing a client, or double-checking a paycheck, adding time by hand is error-prone — minutes are base 60, not base 10. This calculator does it for you. Add one row per shift or work session, set the start and end times, and enter any unpaid break minutes to deduct. It sums everything instantly and shows the total two ways: decimal hours (what payroll systems and invoices use, e.g. 38.50) and hours and minutes (e.g. 38h 30m). Shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically — if the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the shift ran overnight.
How to use it
- Set the start and end time for your first work block using the time pickers.
- Enter unpaid break minutes for that block (lunch, rest breaks) — or leave it at 0.
- Click + Add time block for each additional shift or day; click Remove to delete a row.
- Optionally enter an hourly rate to see estimated gross pay before taxes.
- Read your totals in the results — they update live as you type.
Everything runs privately in your browser: no accounts, no uploads, and your times are never sent anywhere. Pay figures are estimates only, not professional payroll or tax advice — overtime rules, rounding policies, and deductions vary by employer and jurisdiction.
FAQ
- Why do timesheets use decimal hours?
- Payroll math multiplies hours by an hourly rate, which only works with decimals. 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75 because 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 of an hour.
- How are overnight shifts handled?
- If a block's end time is earlier than its start time, the calculator assumes it crossed midnight and adds 24 hours — a 22:00 to 06:00 shift counts as 8 hours.
- Are breaks subtracted from each block?
- Yes. Each row's break minutes are deducted from that block only, and the results show the combined break time removed from your total.
- Can I use this for a whole week or pay period?
- Yes — add one row per day or per shift. There is no limit on rows, so a biweekly period with split shifts works fine.
